The Kilauea Volcanic System
on the Big Island of Hawaii
The Kilauea Volcanic System is the key to seeing volcanic activity in Hawaii either by air or land. The Kilauea Volcano erupted on January 3, 1983, and have had continual activity of various levels ever since. Its this constancy that allows helicopter tours to offer Hawaiian visitors a good chance at seeing lava and steam from the air.

The lava flows of the Kilauea Volcano actually does not come out of the top crater of the volcano. In the diagram above you can see that the lava flow of the Kilauea Volcano shoots off to the side of the volcano out towards the sea. This is why you see the hot lava and steam clouds off to the sides of the summit. So remember if seeing hot lava is important to you the South side of the Big Island of Hawaii is where to have your volcano helicopter tour.
